History: In 1849 a part of Lot 16, Concession 8, was given by William Morrison for a church and burying ground on a hill overlooking the valley of the west branch of the Credit River. Although situated in the village, there was some disagreement among the congregation as to whether a church should be built in such a location. It was felt that perhaps the climb might be too much for the old people. The land was retained, however, and used as a cemetery. The following year (1850) Mr. & Mrs. Applebee gave a piece of ground for a church off the south side of the road, about 100 yards east of the present church, and there a log church was erected. When the Wesleyan Methodists closed their church in 1880 it was bought and moved by the Anglicans, and a chancel and vestry added. This is the present St. John's Anglican Church.
The above church history was taken from a typed sheet (unsigned) found in St. John's record books. The original information was supplied to the writer of that article by Canon R. Allan. [by Elaine Robinson]
Even though the above picture shows a sign in front of the church stating that it was established in 1834, we have found no evidence of that.
