History: Georgetown's Congregationalists organized about 1840 and met in the schoolhouse under Rev. Stephen King. They moved to the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel at the end of Wesleyan Street until they built their own wooden chapel on Church Street in 1851. This structure was replaced by a stone church in 1877.
The building was given to the town in 1912 to be used as Georgetown's Public Library. In 1982 additions were made to include a theatre (the John Elliott Theatre) and transform the building into a cultural centre.
