History: St. Andrews was conceived in St. John's United Church, as a group of newcomers from the Delrex subdivision was encouraged to begin a new congregation in the east end of town. Rev. Morgan McFarlane, minister of St. John's, conducted the exploratory meeting on 9 Jun 1958. Present were 13 members and adherents of St. John's who were resident in that part of Georgetown east of Rexway. Rev. McFarlane explained that the premises at St. John's were overcrowded, and that the Board of Session felt that the time was opportune to investigate the possibility of forming a new church and Sunday school in the Delrex community. He said that the (Halton) Extension Council of the United Church had an option on 2½ acres of land, at a price of approximately $17,000.
A steering committee was immediately set up and things moved quickly. A door-to-door canvas in August 1958 brought parishioners, and the School Board provided space in the corridors of Harrison Public School for Church and Sunday School services until the new church was ready. The first service in the school was held on St. Andrew's Day, 30 Nov 1958, and it was decided to call the new church St. Andrew's United Church. A portable church was erected in the summer of 1959. At that time there was little development south of Sargent Road and the little white frame church stood alone in the field of the former Cam Sinclair farm at Sinclair and Mountainview. The "portable" was a multi-purpose building with a main hall, a meeting room and nursery combined, washrooms, a very small kitchen, and an office.
It wasn't until 1974 that things really improved financially, and a Christian Education wing was built. The dedication service for this wing was on 6 Oct 1974. This wing added a large hall, stage, offices, basement, and new washrooms. However, it wasn't until 1984 that financing was secured to replace the old "portable". The architectural firm of Brown, Beck, and Ross was hired to draw up plans for the new sanctuary. D. Bourke Construction of Maple, Ontario, won the contract to construct the building, and it was completed in early 1985. St. Andrew's finally had its real church, with a pulpit, communion table, tri-chair, baptismal font, and cross. The dedication service was held on 28 Apr 1985.
